Buying a Used Graphic Card

Graphic Cards

The Used Graphic Card Dilemma ….

Cryptocurrencies seem to fall every few years, and the best graphics cards end up in the hands of impatient miners , when combined with the pandemic that led to Graphic Card bottlenecks as early as 2020, the past nine months have been horrific. It’s time for PC Gamer’s to update their key components. If you need a new graphics card, it is best to go to the used graphic card market, but now this can also cause problems.
The GPU shortage is so serious that the first two or three generations of cards are still sold at high prices on eBay. In fact, if you want to increase the GPU benchmark level, it will be too expensive.

Let’s take just a quick example :

The GeForce GTX 1060 6GB was released five years ago in July 2016!The Founders Edition starts at $299, and the third-party card starts at $249. You may find a used GTX 1060 6GB by the end of 2019. Graphic Cards on eBay for between $ 150 and $ 175. Using the same methodology we used in our GPU Price Index, the average eBay price for 6GB GTX 1060 cards sold in the past two weeks was $ 314 for one card to work properly!

If you are considering buying a second-hand graphics card, here is the information you need to know :

There is a process for determining which GPU to buy, and it starts with knowing your budget and setting realistic performance expectations. This is the best way to see how the various GPUs work. You won’t find a card that works like a $ 700 GPU for $ 350 right now, but you can find a $ 400 card that works like a $ 500 card in some cases. At least that’s the hope.
Sometime in the next few months, we’ll likely see more GPUs in places like eBay as China’s shutdown of crypto mining continues.

You don’t want to inherit someone else’s problems just to save a few dollars.
Except maybe we are not just talking about saving a few dollars. The GeForce RTX 3060 is an attractive next-gen GPU with performance not too far from the GTX 1080 Ti, it’s only 5% slower, and it supports ray tracing and DLSS RTX 3060 for $ 742 which is 2.25 – times the official MSRP.  Meanwhile, the GTX 1080 (slower than the 3060) costs around $ 442 and the GTX 1080 Ti is around $ 625 worth considering.

If you don’t want to miss out on raytracing and DLSS support, the RTX 2070 (not Super) works almost on par Equipped with a 12GB RTX 3060, so it might be worth a try, but it’s about $755 now.  Less storage for more money is not a good idea.”Deal” does not necessarily mean that it will be sold at a very low price.
Graphics cards at MSRP are now a joke. It is worth considering, but most cards currently sell for more than the original price. Perhaps that will change in the months to come, but today a current generation card that is within 25% of your MSRP or an older generation card that is close to the MSRP would be good business.
eBay prices for next generation GPUs (Nvidia Ampere and AMD RDNA2) fell 15% last month. We expect older generation cards to drop in price even faster as those cards are less sought after (RTX 3060 is only slightly slower than GTX 1080 Ti, and power consumption is reduced by 30%.

Based on these metrics, a used GTX is a used one 1080 Ti would only make sense if the price was lower than the price of an RTX 3060, especially if you can get the latter new (which you probably can’t right now as the RTX 30 series cards are out of stock  We’ve seen this at least in the US. )

If you read this you fear that you will be spending a ton of money on a used graphics card only to end up with a malfunctioning lemon. We have done our job for years, and we would hesitate too to buy a used car but desperate times call for desperate measures, and if your main GPU has just crashed or you are hoping to get into PC gaming for the first time, you may need to consider a used GPU.

Dealing with a local seller

(for example through Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist or similar) can give you more security in some cases, but once you pay cash it becomes much more difficult to get a refund. eBay and auction sites are not so good, but eBay is more biased towards buyers and on the customers side than on the seller’s side.
Buy from a reputable eBay seller with extensive experience (years) and highly rated,
Given the choice between buying a new graphics card for MSRP or saving money by choosing an older generation card that might perform a little worse, we typically advise PC Gamers to go for this and spend the extra cash .

In a world where it’s almost impossible to buy a new GPU without paying a high price, buying a second-hand GPU may be your only option for some time. We hope that the scarcity of GPUs will end soon, and we can end it all, but we did not hold our breath.
